White papers

Real Time Enterprise — The Real Time Enterprise (RTE) proposes that gathering and using information in near real time will benefit some parts of the business.  A classic example is presenting custom browser screens to a customer looking at a website, based on the customer's previous buying patterns, their current click stream, the current inventory, and any promotional campaigns.

Data Warehouse — Some databases are optimized to enter the data while other databases are optimized to get the data out again.  Databases to enter data are generally the OLTP (On-Line Transaction Processing) type.  Databases designed to help users access and analyze data are generally a type of data warehouse.

Metadata-Ontology System (MOS) — Metadata is used to describe and document the enterprise.  The Web Ontology Language (OWL) provides a standardized XML-based ontology that can be used to build enhanced metadata systems.  This paper describes a metadata system that is understandable and can be stored in either XML or relational tables, allowing metadata to be accessed with conventional tools.

Technical papers

Metadata-Ontology System (MOS) Usage and Reference — This is a draft design document describing how the metadata system is built using the OWL standard.  The design uses a quad (subject - predicate - index - value) that avoids the complexities of RDF.

SAS Socket Server — Any computer connected to the Internet that can read and write to a socket can talk to any other computer with these same capabilities.  This means that almost any computer today, regardless of hardware platform, operating system, or programming language, can talk to any other computer over the Internet.   SAS software supports server socket connections, allowing other computers with or without SAS loaded on them to start SAS jobs and recover files from remote locations.

SAS Controller — Many industries have a substantial investment in SAS code to run complex production processes.  These processes are made up of many individual SAS jobs and other jobs such as relational database and CRM updates.  These jobs have complex preconditions and interactions.  All the jobs must be monitored and their status made available to various company departments, depending on the exact nature of the problems encountered.
